WHO has released a draft of the Global Action Plan on Physical Activity for 2018 to 2030 to address the many health concerns associated with inactivity, according to a press release from the organization. The draft is currently available for public comment.
Physical activity is one behavioral risk factor that can help prevent noncommunicable diseases, such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes; however, globally only one in four adults and four out of five adolescents meet global recommendations on physical activity, according to WHO.
In 2013, the World Health Assembly set the goal to reduce physical inactivity by 10% by 2025, but progress toward that goal has been slow and uneven across the globe, prompting the Global Action Plan on Physical Activity.
The draft plan includes policy guidance and multi-disciplinary approaches to promoting physical activity for all areas of the world.
The draft is currently available for public comment at www.who.int/ncds/governance/gappa_version_4August2017.pdf?ua=1.
The comment period is open through September, after which WHO will update the plan for anticipated release in 2018.
