Game of Thrones Fans Just Got the Best News Yet About Season 8

It looks like a dream team is back together.

As Game of Thrones enters production for its eighth and final season, little nuggets of spoiler-free information have come tumbling out. Fans have a long, long wait before they’ll see the final product, so you can forgive their excitement over little things like the color of Emilia Clarke’s hair. That particular news came via Clarke’s Instagram—and today that social-media platform has yielded up an even juicier Season 8 clue. It sure looks like Miguel Sapochnik, the most popular battle director in the show’s history, is making his triumphant return to the series.

After winning rave reviews for Season 5’s “Hardhome” and an Emmy for Season 6’s “Battle of the Bastards,” Sapochnik took Season 7 off. (Anyone who has watched the behind-the-scenes videos of “Bastards” can hardly blame him for wanting a break.) That means the two big battle episodes of Season 7, “Spoils of War” (Drogon vs. Jaime) and “Beyond the Wall” (Jon and company vs. the Night King), were directed by newcomer Matt Shakman and veteran Alan Taylor, respectively. While Shakman’s dragon-fire-filled episode was widely praised, Taylor had to bear the brunt of complaints over gaps in logic. Some of those gaps, admittedly, came at the script level, but others were a result of a battle shoot that was sloppier than the precise Sapochnik style Thrones fans have become accustomed to. Even Neil deGrasse Tyson took a shot or two at “Beyond the Wall” just this week.
That’s why this new photo from cinematographer Fabian Wagner will come as such a delight to Game of Thronesfans who pay attention to every name in the credits. As fan site Watchers on the Wall have noted, Wagner has posted an old photo of himself with assistant Caroline Alderson, VFX supervisor Joe Bauer, VFX producer Steve Kullback, and Sapochnik himself. Wagner captioned the photo: “Back on Game of Thrones for prep of the final season and the team is back together.” The photo may be old, but the caption promises something entirely new.
Barring an official announcement from HBO, this feels like a very solid confirmation of Sapochnik’s much-hoped-for return. It’s unclear how many of the final six episodes he will shoot, though the standard is usually two. And Sapochnik is good for much more than just battles. His other Season 6 episode, “The Winds of Winter,” is the best-regarded finale of the show’s run. There are unconfirmed rumors buzzing around the Thrones community that show-runners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff themselves want to direct the finale; though the pair have only directed two early episodes together, they obviously have plenty of experience on set. And some fans are still holding out hope to see a woman behind the camera in the final season. (Only one of the 19 directors to ever work on Game of Thrones has been a woman.)
